Thursday: School Gala! 4pm-7pm

We will be baking for Golden Time.

Swimming
This week we are very lucky to have the expertise of Henk Greupink (Jason's dad) for 2 of our swimming lessons.

Henk is a swimming coach at The Aquatic Centre for Orange Swim School, and has kindly agreed to come in and teach our class a few things this week.
We are sooo lucky!

Reading
Keep up the great work with reading at home! The children are all making good progress, which is really neat to see.

Some popular titles from our library corner are "Billy B Brown" for the girls, "Zac Power" for the boys, and "Hey Jack" for both the boys and the girls. These are all neat series of books.

Home readers
The school's reading resource room is looking very bare. Could you please have a hunt around the house for any home readers that might be tucked away, and send them back to school in your child's book bag. No questions asked :)

Maths
WALHT add doubles to 5, then 10.
With doubles to 5, the children must fill up 1 hand first before crossing over to the other hand.
This will help them to instantly identify finger patterns within 5, then with 5.

Once they know their doubles to 5, you can work on doubles to 10.

Here's the trick ;)

If the problem was 6 + 6

Look at 6 fingers- 5 on 1 hand, and 1 on the other.
5 + 5 = 10.
1 + 1 = 2.
So the answer is 12.

Now try 7 + 7

5 + 5 = 10.
2 + 2 = 4.
So the answer is 14.

Try practicing these this week.

Squares and Pentagons

1 + 1 = 2.

      so
10 + 10 = 20

4 + 4 = 8

      so
40 + 40 = 80

Can you see a pattern?
Try practicing these this week.

Head lice
Nits have been reported within our class, so lets all get our hair checked, combed with a nit comb just in case, and treated if need be.

Have an awesome week.

Milk carton folding competition

Well done to Sterling who represented our class in the finals for the milk carton folding competition today.

In the end it was 3 way tie, so each finalist a cool prize!

Leg It with Adam

Every Wednesday Adam from Sport Bay of Plenty takes the Year 2's for Leg It, a fun skills based programme.

In our first lesson we played tag by in moving different ways, such as hopping, skipping and jumping. Then we played stuck in the mud.
To finish, we did some balancing activities on our own, then with a buddy.

In our second lesson we did more fitness games such as tag and chain tag.

Then we looked at the jumping technique. We had to have 2 feet on the ground, then bend our knees and use our arms to jump as high as we could.
Once we could do that, we tried to jump as long as we could.

After that we had lily pad races and played cross the river.
We played stuck in the mud to finish.
I wonder what we will do during Go4it this week?

Golden time- Scavenger hunt

The children had a blast completing a scavenger hunt for Golden time on Friday.

Ask your child if they can remember what tasks they had to complete.

Week 4

Monday:
Tuesday: Library.
Wednesday: "Go4it" with Adam.  Bring PE uniform if you need to.
Thursday:
Friday: Spelling test.

Hi everyone. It’s week 4 already!

There aren’t too many interruptions in our timetable this week, so we can get a lot more learning and assessments done.

Reading

I have almost completed running records (reading testing) with the class. This ensures that the children are in a reading group with others who are reading at a similar level.

Thank you for reading with your child at home every night- it really does make a difference.

Reading eggs

Most of the children are able to log onto Reading eggs by themselves using their login and password details from last year.

Can you please see if your child can do this on their own.

Spelling

It was our first week of spelling testing on Friday. Thank you so much to Eleanor (Emma’s Nana) who has offered to do this for us each week- it would be very hard to get this done without her!
Those who missed out will be tested on Monday.

If your child got any words wrong- they have the same list to learn this week.

Writing

We are well into our writing programme. If you want to help your child to write at home, encourage them to write about what they did, write a description of something, write a letter to a friend, or write a shopping list.

If the children don’t know how to spell a word, they need to  st-r-e-t-ch out the sounds they can hear in the word, write it down as they do this, then underline the word.

This week we will be looking at the format for writing a report.

Maths

During the past 3 weeks we have been learning maths games and activities to help with the rotation of each group during maths time.

A maths site I get the children to use during maths is ICT Maths. You might like to have a look around this site with your child.

There are also lots of neat apps you can download to practice basic facts, such Maths Pop.

We have been looking at patterns to 10.

Our top group has built on this by making 'tidy' 10 numbers when adding numbers together.

We have also been looking at adding doubles to 10.

Mornings

Thank you for getting your children to school on time. I know how busy mornings can be, but it is nice if the children can have a run around and a chat with their friends before class starts.

Have a great week everyone.

Ash Wednesday Mass

Yesterday we all wrote our Lent promises down on a small paper.
We had to think about how we could change to be more like Jesus, and make a promise.

Then we put our promises in a basket at our Promise Ceremony.

Today we celebrated Ash Wednesday at Mass. It is the first day of Lent.

After Mass we received the sign of the cross on our forehead from ashes of a Palm tree to remind us to renew our heart with God.

We are all going to try hard to keep our promise and be more like Jesus over the next 40 days.

Ask your child what their promise was.

Golden time!

For Golden time last Friday the children got to bring a toy to school.
They all had a great time!

Make sure to follow the Golden rules Room 9- this Friday we are going to have a fun scavenger hunt!
