Hi Parents,
I hope you are enjoying ANZAC weekend. I had the pleasure of attending the Civic Memorial Service at The Energy Events Centre yesterday, which marked the 100th Anniversary of the ANZAC's Gallipoli Landings. Both of my Great Grandfathers served in Gallipoli, so ANZAC Day is an extra special day of remembrance for me.

Term 2 learning
I have agreed to continue teaching in Room 9 for the entire term, then Ms Sylvia Dunkley will take over next term.
She currently teaches Year 5's and 6's in Room 4, and is really looking forward to the change in levels. I'm sure she will do a great job with our beautiful class. I am really going to miss them!!!

Holiday Reading logs
These are to be returned to me this Tuesday. We are aiming to have 100% of these returned.
I have had a look through the holiday reading logs that have already been returned, and see some great reading has taken place during the holidays. Thank you for your support in this.

Reading
Please continue to have your child read to you each night.
As well as working towards achieving at or above The National Standard for their age, our focus will be on fluency, understanding and comprehension.

Spelling
Spelling will continue this term. Please go over your child's words with them on Monday and Thursday night at the least.

We are so fortunate to have Emma's Nana Eleanor do the spelling testing for us. She tests the children during the entire first block, and often part of the second block before going to work herself.

Please check to make sure your child brings their homework book to school on Fridays for this.

Writing
This term we will focus on both recount and persuasive writing.
Persuasive writing is when the children try to talk their audience into believing what they think.
Topics for discussion will include “The best pet”, “The best colour” and “Children should choose their bedtime”.
The children will also be learning how to rework their stories and how to edit using a dictionary.

Mathematics
We will be continuing with number knowledge all through the term. Your child’s learning will depend on what maths stage they are working at.

Our maths strand this term is Geometry, so we will be looking at 2D and 3D shapes, and the properties for these.

Concept
This term our concept is Sustainability.
We will use God's Creation as the basis for this learning and will move into the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling rubbish.
The learning will incorporate RE, science, technology, maths, reading and writing.

Have a wonderful week.

The secret word is "ANZAC". Get your child to whisper it to me on Tuesday morning to show you have read the blog, and they will get a little treat ;)

The Splash!

In the holidays I went to Rainbow Fairy Springs with my mum, dad and sister.
First we went for a walk around. I saw lots of trout fish in the trout pools.
Next we went to watch the bird show. It was funny. I liked it when the parrot did a flip.
Then we went on the splash ride. On the way around I saw a dinosaur and it gave me a huge fright.
At the end we went down the splash. It was awesome!
Last we had a play on the playground. I loved going on the flying fox.
It was a great day. I hope we go there again.

Maths

As well as basic facts practice, this week I will be checking to see if the children can count forwards and backwards in 2's to 20 (then to 100).

Reading
Your child will bring home a reader (book) every night in their book bag. Most times the reader will have been seen by your child at school, but not always.
If it is too tricky, or they are not familiar with it, read it to them, discuss it's meaning and the pictures and spend some time just talking about what they think of the story.

Some friendly reminders

School starts at 8.45am
Please make sure your child is at school at around 8.30am, as this gives them time to have a chat with their friends and settle in before prayer time.

Uniform

The children are to be in winter uniform and shoes this term. The school takes pride in how lovely the children look in their correct school uniform.

Blog

Try and check the blog a few times a week so that you know what is happening at school.

Parent help

If you have any spare time this term and would like to be a parent helper in Room 9, we could use your help putting books away or listening to children read. Let me know if you can help.

I will see your beautiful children tomorrow!

Have a wonderful week.

Holiday Reading Log

Holiday reading logs went home today,
so lets READ, READ, READ these holidays!!!

Write the title down on your child's reading log every time they:

1.  Read to someone.

2.  Read with someone.

3.  Have a story read to them.

There are 2 huge prizes to be won this time...
An ipod or
a chromebook!!!

Reading logs are due back in week 2 on Tuesday the 28th of April.

We also go into the draw for a class prize if at least 90% of our class return their reading logs. So 23/26 children need to bring them back. Lets go Room 9!

I will also be reading these holidays, so I'll make sure to write them on my reading log too.

(Unfortunately teachers aren't allowed to enter the draw for the chromebook and ipod though).

If your child was away today, or their reading log didn't make it home, just write down what they have read etc... on a piece of paper.

But most importantly, have fun reading!!!
