Number rumble

Last week our class came a very close 2nd in New Zealand. Awesome work Room 9!

Congratulations to Paul, who won a Lego set in our Pro-monkey draw.

Your child can only access their account between school hours.
If they want to play Number Rumble outside of this, you need to pay a small fee to upgrade their account. It really is worth it!

Hi Parents
There are only 4 weeks left of term 3!

Reading
Thank you very much for your continued support at home with your child's reading, it is certainly making a difference!

Please remember to allow your child time to figure out unknown words. In class we focus on the strategies we need to use when this happens, such as sounding out the initial, middle and end sounds in the words, thinking about what would make sense and sound right, and checking the picture for clues.

The children are now reading longer stories that are more complex, so it is important to talk about the book more. Ask your child questions such as: What do you think of that? Why do you think they felt that way? How would you feel if that happened to you? What do you think will happen next? Can you tell me 5 interesting facts from the story? Can you retell that story from the beginning to the end?

Dunk the Teacher
Thank you to all the children and parents who voted for a teacher to be dunked. Just over $186.00 was raised for The NZ Cancer Society. 1st place went to... Mr Macmillan, yay! We look forward to his return to school so he can complete his ice challenge :)

Father's Day Gifts - $3
These will be available from Wednesday to Friday at lunchtime in the hall foyer.

Have a lovely week.
Eliana.

Hi Parents.
I hope you enjoyed your weekend.

School Photos - Monday
Tomorrow we will be having class, individual and sibling photos taken at school. Please check that your child is dressed in the correct school uniform. If they have a woolen school jersey, please have them wear it as polar fleece jerseys are not to be worn in school photos. If your child doesn't have one, there will be spare ones for them to use.
All girls hair is to be tied back so we can see their beautiful faces.
If you would like to order photos but haven't yet brought back your money and form, please take these to the office BEFORE school starts.

Prayer time
School starts at 8.45am. Please make sure your child is at school before this as our morning prayers are being interrupted by children coming in late. Thank you for your help with this.

Maths Evening - Wednesday 5:15pm - 6:00pm in Room 10.
A notice was sent home with your child on Friday for this. The night is designed to give you some information about how maths is assessed and taught, as well as some ideas on how to help your child at home. Again, this is aimed at our target students, but all parents are welcome to attend.

RE
This term we are learning about our church and the privileges and responsibilities that come with belonging to a family, school and church.
It is so lovely to see the children grow in their love and knowledge of God.
There are a few children in our class who are not yet baptised in the Catholic Church, but would like to be.

I have put some information about Baptism on our RE page if you would like to find out more about it.
If you or your child would like to get baptised, I encourage you to ring Andrea Tuki at the Church office on 3480289 to arrange this.

Have a blessed week.
Eliana.

Stacy Gregg visit

We were very lucky to have Stacy Gregg visit our school. She has won the NZ Book Awards Children's Choice for Junior Fiction twice. She had lots of interesting things to tell us, and even read us the first chapter of her new book, Girl Who Rode the Wind.

Hi Parents.
It was great to catch up with you during Parent Interviews last week. Thank you so much for all of the positive feedback. The learning is going really well in our class with most of the children working at or above standard in reading, writing and maths. It goes to show what hard work at school in a safe learning environment and support from home can do!

If you didn’t have an interview time but would like to meet with me, please let me know. I am happy to make a time to do so.

Mary MacKillop Feast Day
This Friday we will celebrate Mary MacKillop day.  She is very important to our school and is our Patron Saint.  Mary came to NZ from Australia and realised there was a need for Catholic education in our area.  She started our school in the early 1900's and is a figure for us all to look up to.
The day will start with Mass at 9am followed by some cool sharing and learning experiences.  We will have a shared lunch so please bring a plate of lunch food on Friday.  There will be no sausage sizzle this day.

Writing
This week we will continue learning how to write an explanation.  I did a pre-test with the children by asking them to explain why there is day and night, and we had some very interesting stories!  After sharing these we watched some learning clips and discussed our new understanding of why we have day and night.
By the end of the term the children should  be able to follow the format to write an explanation of how or why something happens.

Reading
The children have many opportunities to read during the day at school, but they need that extra practice at home. So please keep up the reading at home.

Homework
Homework will begin this week. I don't believe young children should have a lot of homework, but a bit of reading, spelling and maths is enough for this age.

For spelling your child needs to:
Look at the word
Say the word
Sound the word out
Cover the word
Write the word
Check the word

Portfolios and RE books
Thank you to those children who have already given me theirs. If you haven't yet, please bring them in this week.

Library Lion Competition
Mrs O'Leary has a competition on to name the new library lion. Click here to check out the library blog and register your name choice. You need to put your name choice for the lion in the comments section underneath the competition details - make sure you add your name and room 9.
You have until Friday 7th August to submit your lion name.

Have a fantastic week
Eliana
