Our learning

Term 4

We are learning about transformations.

Our concept of focus this term is  Symbolism: Messages within images.

We are learning about the signs and symbols we see on the road, in shops, at school and in church.

What is a symbol?

We defined a symbol as being anything that stands for, or represents, something else.

This symbol represents our school.

How do symbols talk to us? How can symbols be used? Why is it important to have the same understanding of some symbols?

Term 3

Week 8 and 9

We are learning about the 4 Seasons.

We learned that there are 4 seasons in a year. They are Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring. There are 3 months in each season.
The Earth is tilted on it’s axis and orbits the Sun. It takes 1 year for the Earth to go right around the Sun.
Some parts of the Earth get more warmth from the Sun at different times of the year.
This is what gives us our seasons.

We had to write our own explanation of why we have seasons. These will go in our Portfolios.

Week 6 and 7

We are learning about the Earth's Moon,
The Lunar Cycle and
The 8 phases of the moon.

We learned that the Earth's Moon doesn't have it's own light source.  The moonlight we see is actually the sun's light being reflected off the moon's rocky surface.

We found out lots of interesting facts about The Earth's Moon too!

Week 5

We are learning to write an explanation of the life cycle of a butterfly.

Come into class and read the stories we wrote!

Week 3 and 4

This week we are learning about the Sun- te Ra.

We learned that when NZ is facing the sun we get it's heat and light - that's daytime.  When NZ is facing away from the sun, it's heat and light can't reach us, we are in the shadow - so it is night.

Week 2

The NED show

Week 1

Maths problem solving

During maths I split the children into groups of 4 and give them word problems to solve.

When all of the groups have answered each problem we share our results and talk about what strategies we used to solve the problem.

I use "talk moves" during this time, such as:
- so you're saying that ....  (revoice)
- can you repeat what _____ just said?  (repeat)
- does anyone have more to add to that?   (add on)
- what else?  (add on)
- can you tell me why you think that?  (reasoning)
- could you explain that to me in a different way?  (reasoning)
- do you agree/ disagree with the results? Why?  (reasoning)
- how do you know your answer is correct?  (reasoning)

Term 2

Come on guys, get fire wise!

On Wednesday two Rotorua firefighters, Grant and Paul, came in to talk to us about being fire wise.

We know that if there is a fire, we need to get down, get low, and get out FAST.

The children did some wonderful fire art work too.

Number rumble goes on holiday too

But if you upgrade your child's account, they can access their learning during the holidays.

I looked at the Hall of Fame on the last day of school and we are coming 16th out of all of the Year 1's and 2's in New Zealand.

Way to go room 9!!!

Matariki art and craft activities

We have had lots of fun doing different Matariki activities this week!

Matariki cookies

The seven fish
Another Matariki story we learned about was The seven fish.

Hangi

As part of our Matariki celebrations, we had a hāngi for lunch. A hāngi is a traditional Māori style of cooking where steam is used to cook the food while it is beneath the ground. The hangi we ate was steamed in a natural thermal steamer at Ohinemutu, so it's a little bit different.

Karakia

Kai time!

Steam pudding and cream

  Matariki

We are learning about Matariki.

Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades.

It rises in mid-winter – late May or early June, and can be seen until the following April. For many Māori, it means the start of a new year.

Matariki literally means the ‘eyes of god’ (mata ariki) or ‘little eyes’ (mata riki).

According to myth, when Ranginui, the sky father, and Papatūānuku, the earth mother, were separated by their children, the god of the winds, Tāwhirimātea, became so angry that he tore out his eyes and threw them into the heavens.

It is great for the children to learn the stories about Matariki, but they know that God created the heavens and the earth.

Here are pictures of the Maori gods the children drew.

We learned an action song to help us to remember the names of the Maori gods too.

Tanemahuta
Tawhirimatea
Tumatauenga

Let's get ready to  (Number) RUMBLE.....

The children have been enthusiastically working through their Number rumble programme in class. It can be accessed on the computers and ipads, which is fantastic.

Thank you to the Parents who have also upgraded their child's account so they can access it at home too!

Davey is leading the class with over 4000 points. Keep up the amazing work Davey!

Your child should be working on the maths problems:

Circles: 0-20, then 0-100
Triangles: 0-100
Squares: 0-100, then 1000
Pentagons: 0-1000

Keep an eye on THE HALL OF FAME room 9. We are St Marys School, Year 2, Rotorua.
Let's try and get in the top 100 in New Zealand!

Our Assembly

Here are some photos from School assembly on Friday.
The children did a wonderful job hosting!!!

"We like to.... move it!"

We had a great time at Move it on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Maths whizzes

We love learning maths in our class!!!
From Monday to Friday we learn number knowledge and strategies, and on Fridays this term we are learning about Geometry.

While I am teaching a group on the mat (M), the other 3 maths groups are either doing a worksheet (A), playing maths games on technology (T) or playing hands on games from their games box (H).

The website the children are using during maths is Number rumble (10 monkeys.com). We have access to this site during school hours until September. It is a fantastic site!

Here are some of our busy mathematicians working hard during maths time.

Can you name all of these 2D (flat) shapes?
How many sides does each shape have?

Can you name these 3D (solid) shapes?
How many faces does each shape have?

Persuasive writing

WALHT write persuasive stories.
The children are getting much better at following the format. Some children are very persuasive!

 Super writing Emma!

They also had to draw the pet they had chosen to write about.
Great work today room 9!

Wacky hair day

Thank you for supporting wacky hair day and fundraising for Nepal today. The children all looked awesome- it was really hard to choose a winner!!!
The class decided that Tinky and Kyle were the winners. Well done.

Golden time dance party

Pentecost Mass

We had a lovely day with our friends from St Michael's school for Pentecost Mass and an afternoon of tabloid sports.

The Holy Spirit lives within us!

Mandarin with Ling

Every Friday from 9-9.30 Ling comes into our class to teach Mandarin. We are so lucky- he does a great job with the children!

WALHT (We are learning how to) say:
*hello
*goodbye
*thank you
*listen
*stand up
*sit down; and
*teacher

Around 4.5 million people live in New Zealand.
Ling told us that there around 1.5 billion people that live in China!!!

 Our Autumn walk

We did a brainstorm of what we already knew about Autumn.
Then we went on an Autumn walk and admired all of God's creations.
Nature walks are a wonderful way of spending time with children!

Here are the photos from our walk.
Can your child retell our walk to you?

Jayda graduates!

Jayda has worked really hard in reading this year, and has graduated from Reading Recovery.
Well done.We are super proud of you Jayda!!!

Reading
Look at all the busy readers during reading time today!

During reading the children are to read a book from their coloured box before moving through their group's tasks for the day.

Every day I see the Sparrows, Pukeko and Kea.

Every second day I see the Owls.

Mrs Rennie will be working with the Kiwis every day this week.

She will then work with different groups.

My mum
The children wrote wonderful stories about their mums!
Hopefully you all received your cards with their published story today :)

Great writing Davey!

In class we are learning all about God, and in particular, The Creation Story.
The idea is that we acknowledge that God created all living things and that people have made (out of the gifts God has given us) things that help us in our everyday life.

The children have written some great stories and produced some wonderful pieces of art work in this area!

Ask your child to show you which one they painted.
What day did God create it?

The children I saw at the disco looked like they were having a great time!

Congratulations to Madeline and her mum Valerie, who won the mother daughter dance too.

Check out the cool shape monsters we made on Friday!
Can you see yours?
What shapes did you use?

ANZAC DAY- 25 April

This week the children have completed some lovely work around our ANZAC Day study.

We read stories, watched clips, did a fact sheet, wrote letters to soldiers, made poppies, contributed to the school's ceramic mosaic display, made ANZAC biscuits (they were delicious!) and did a piece of art work.
We remembered the soldiers who gave their lives for our freedom.
Lest we forget.
